Why some natural deodorants can irritate skin

Short answer: when a natural deodorant stops feeling good, the usual suspects are baking soda, essential oils, or the timing of application on freshly shaved skin. Reading the ingredient list and patch testing before daily use solves most of it. If skin stays irritated after you stop using a product, that's a question for a clinician, not a blog.

We're a skincare company, not a medical one. Nothing here diagnoses or treats anything — it's just what we've learned about ingredients and underarms.

The three common culprits

1. Baking soda

Sodium bicarbonate is strongly alkaline; skin's surface is naturally slightly acidic. Applied to thin underarm skin daily, that gap is what people describe as stinging or roughness. Some people are fine with it for years. Others are not, and no amount of persistence changes that.

2. Essential oils

Concentrated botanicals — tea tree, citrus oils, lavender — are common in natural deodorant and are among the more frequent causes of contact irritation in cosmetics generally. "Natural" and "gentle" aren't the same word.

3. Shaving plus product

A razor leaves micro-abrasions. Anything applied immediately after has an easier route in. Waiting even a few minutes, or shaving at night and applying in the morning, makes a real difference.

How to patch test properly

  1. Apply a small amount to the inside of your forearm.
  2. Leave it for 24 hours without washing the spot.
  3. If nothing happens, try one underarm for a few days.
  4. Only then move to daily use on both sides.

What to look for on a gentler label

  • No baking soda; magnesium hydroxide instead.
  • No synthetic fragrance and no essential oils.
  • A short list, so you can identify a culprit if one appears.
  • A conditioning fat base rather than a drying one.

That's the specification we built ours to: grass-fed and finished tallow, organic cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil, organic arrowroot powder, magnesium hydroxide. We still recommend patch testing — skin varies, and we'd rather you test than guess.
