What is tallow skincare?
Tallow skincare is made from rendered beef fat — specifically the suet around a cow's kidneys. When sourced from 100% grass-fed cattle, tallow is naturally rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, and contains a fatty-acid profile that closely mirrors the sebum your own skin produces. That biological similarity is why tallow absorbs cleanly without clogging pores or leaving a greasy film.
Is grass-fed tallow better than grain-fed tallow for skin?
Yes. Grass-fed and grass-finished tallow contains significantly higher levels of vitamins A, D, E, K2, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and omega-3 fatty acids than grain-fed tallow. At Lone Star Tallow we only use 100% grass-fed and finished suet — never feedlot or grain-finished sources.
Does tallow deodorant actually work?
Yes. Our tallow deodorant is handcrafted in Texas with 100% grass-fed and finished suet tallow, organic cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil, organic arrowroot powder, and magnesium hydroxide. Magnesium hydroxide neutralizes odor-causing bacteria, arrowroot absorbs moisture, and the tallow + coconut base nourishes the skin. It's an aluminum-free deodorant — not an antiperspirant — so your body still sweats naturally, but the smell is controlled. Most customers report all-day odor protection with a single morning application.
What ingredients are in your products?
Each product is formulated with its own short, intentional ingredient list — they are not the same. Our Deodorant is made with 100% grass-fed and finished beef tallow, organic cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil, organic arrowroot powder, and magnesium hydroxide. Our Lotion is made with 100% grass-fed and finished beef tallow and organic cold-pressed jojoba oil — nothing else. Our Lip Balm is made with 100% grass-fed and finished beef tallow, organic cold-pressed coconut oil, and pure beeswax. No fillers, no synthetics, no fragrance in any of them.
Will tallow clog my pores or cause breakouts?
No. Tallow has a comedogenic rating of approximately 2 out of 5, putting it in the low-risk category. Because its fatty-acid composition is so similar to human sebum, the skin recognizes and absorbs it efficiently rather than rejecting it. Most people — including those with acne-prone skin — tolerate pure tallow extremely well.
Is tallow safe to use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding?
Tallow itself is one of the cleanest skincare ingredients available — it's literally just animal fat plus naturally occurring vitamins. Our products contain no synthetic fragrance, parabens, phthalates, aluminum, or seed oils. That said, we always recommend pregnant or nursing mothers consult their physician before introducing any new product.
Why no seed oils?
Industrial seed oils (canola, soybean, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed) are highly processed, prone to oxidation, and inflammatory when applied to the skin or absorbed. We only use stable, traditional fats your skin recognizes — beef tallow, organic cold-pressed jojoba oil (in our Lotion), organic cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil (in our Deodorant and Lip Balm), and pure beeswax (in our Lip Balm).
What does Lone Star Tallow smell like?
Our unscented products have a very mild, neutral scent that fades within minutes of application. We never use synthetic fragrance or essential oils that can irritate sensitive skin. If you're new to tallow, you may notice a faint, clean smell at first that disappears completely once absorbed.
How long does tallow skincare last?
Unopened, our tallow products have a shelf life of approximately 12–18 months when stored away from direct heat and sunlight. Once opened, we recommend using within 9–12 months for best potency. Tallow is naturally shelf-stable and does not require refrigeration.
Where is Lone Star Tallow made?
Every jar is hand-rendered, hand-whipped, and hand-poured in Texas using 100% grass-fed and finished suet. Small batch, family operated, and never outsourced.
Do you ship nationwide?
Yes. We ship to all 50 U.S. states. Orders over $50 ship free. Most orders go out within 1–2 business days from our Texas workshop.
How is your tallow rendered?
We render suet the traditional low-and-slow way — gently heating grass-fed and finished beef suet until the pure fat separates from any connective tissue. The result is a clean, snow-white tallow with a very mild, neutral scent. We never use chemical solvents, deodorizers, or bleaching agents.
Is your tallow deodorant an antiperspirant?
No. Antiperspirants use aluminum salts to plug sweat ducts and stop perspiration entirely. Our tallow deodorant is aluminum-free — your body still sweats naturally (which is healthy), but magnesium hydroxide neutralizes odor-causing bacteria and arrowroot powder absorbs surface moisture.
How is tallow different from shea butter or coconut oil?
Shea butter and coconut oil are plant fats. Their fatty-acid profiles are structurally different from human sebum, so they can sit on the skin's surface longer. Grass-fed tallow's fatty-acid profile closely mirrors human sebum — skin recognizes it as compatible and absorbs it more efficiently. Tallow also carries fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K in a bioavailable form that plant butters cannot match.
Can I use tallow on my face?
Yes. Many customers use our lotion as their entire nighttime routine. Start with a very small amount — tallow softens at body temperature and a little goes a long way. If your skin is acne-prone, patch-test on your jawline for a few nights first.
Will tallow help with eczema or very dry skin?
Many customers with eczema, keratosis pilaris, and chronic dryness report that grass-fed tallow lotion works better than commercial creams. The fatty-acid ratio helps rebuild lipid barriers rather than sitting on top of dry patches. That said, we make skincare, not medicine — please talk to a dermatologist for medical eczema.
Do you test on animals?
No. We test on ourselves, our family, and a small group of friends who volunteer to try new batches. Never on animals.
Is the coconut oil in your products refined or unrefined?
Both the coconut oil in our deodorant and the coconut oil in our lip balm are organic, cold-pressed, and unrefined — meaning they retain their natural fatty-acid structure and mild scent without solvents or high-heat processing.
Is your beeswax organic or local?
Our beeswax is pure and natural — we source it from responsible U.S. beekeepers, but it is not certified organic and not specifically local to Texas.
How should I store my tallow products?
Room temperature, out of direct sunlight and away from radiators or hot windows. Tallow softens above ~90°F. If a jar liquefies in transit or on a hot counter, let it firm back up at room temperature — the properties are unchanged.
Do you offer refills or larger sizes?
Not yet — every batch is currently poured into our standard jars and tins. If you'd like a larger size or bulk order, email us and we'll work something out.
Do you sell wholesale?
Yes, in limited quantities. We work with select independent shops, spas, and clean-beauty retailers. Send us a note with your store name and location and we'll reply with a wholesale sheet.
How long does shipping take?
Most orders ship within 1–2 business days from Texas via USPS. Standard delivery typically arrives within 3–7 business days across the continental U.S.
What is your return policy?
If you're unhappy with a product for any reason, email us within 30 days of receiving your order and we'll make it right. Because tallow is a personal-care product, we cannot resell returned items — we simply refund or replace.
Who owns Lone Star Tallow?
Lone Star Tallow is family-owned and operated. Trent Conley serves as president and runs day-to-day operations. Every product is made by our small family team in Texas.
