Natural deodorant comparison

Four common ways to handle underarms: conventional antiperspirant, a typical baking-soda natural deodorant, a typical coconut-oil natural deodorant, and our tallow deodorant. No competitor bashing — just what each one is built to do, so you can pick the right tool.

The short version: only antiperspirants reduce sweat, and they use aluminum salts to do it, which is why the FDA regulates them as over-the-counter drugs. The three deodorant types work on odor instead. Among those three, the real differences are the base fat, the odor ingredient, and whether fragrance is involved.

A note on fairness: formulas vary enormously within each category. Some drugstore products are deodorant-only rather than antiperspirants, and plenty of baking-soda formulas are excellent. Everything below describes what is typical or common, not universal. The only column we can speak to with certainty is our own.

Who may prefer each

Conventional antiperspirant

Best for people whose main concern is visible wetness — dress shirts, presentations, weddings. It is the only category on this page that reduces perspiration, and it is labeled as an over-the-counter drug for exactly that reason.

Baking-soda natural deodorant

Best for people who want a plant-based, inexpensive deodorant and whose skin tolerates alkaline powder well. It is effective at odor control. It is also the formula most often abandoned because of underarm discomfort.

Coconut-oil natural deodorant

Best for people who want a simple plant-based formula and live somewhere consistently cool. The main trade-off is texture: coconut oil melts in the mid-70s °F, so the jar changes character with the season.

Lone Star tallow deodorant

Best for people whose concern is odor rather than wetness, who have reacted to baking soda, who want no synthetic fragrance, and who want a four-ingredient label. Not the right pick if you need measurable sweat reduction — no deodorant does that.

Comparison FAQ

Which type actually stops sweat?
Only aluminum-based antiperspirants reduce perspiration, and in the United States that makes them over-the-counter drugs. All three deodorant types listed here — tallow, baking soda, and coconut oil — control odor rather than sweat.
Which is gentlest on freshly shaved skin?
That varies by person, but baking soda is the ingredient most often blamed for stinging because it is strongly alkaline while skin's surface is naturally slightly acidic. Formulas without baking soda or essential oils have fewer common irritants. Patch test any new product before daily use.
Is a coconut-oil deodorant the same as a tallow deodorant?
No. Coconut oil melts near room temperature, so a coconut-only formula swings between soupy in summer and hard in winter. Tallow has a higher melt point and holds a consistent whipped texture. Our formula uses both — tallow for structure, organic cold-pressed coconut oil to keep it scoopable.
Do these generalizations apply to every product in each category?
No. Formulas vary widely within every category, and some drugstore products are deodorant-only rather than antiperspirants. The columns below describe what is typical or common, not universal.
Can I use more than one?
Plenty of people use an antiperspirant for specific occasions and a deodorant the rest of the time. They do different jobs, so there is nothing contradictory about it.
