Magnesium Deodorant: A Baking-Soda-Free Option

What is a magnesium deodorant?
"Magnesium deodorant" usually means a deodorant that uses magnesium hydroxide for odor control. It's become popular as an alternative to baking-soda formulas. Some products also use magnesium in spray or liquid forms, which are different compounds.
Like all deodorants, a magnesium deodorant helps control odor; it doesn't stop sweat.
Meet the tallow version
Most magnesium deodorants are built on plant butters, seed oils, or coconut oil. Ours is built on 100% grass-fed and finished beef tallow, with a little coconut oil for softness and arrowroot to absorb surface moisture.
If you like the idea of a magnesium deodorant but want a richer, simpler base, tallow is worth trying.
Ingredients
The full deodorant formula — four ingredients
- 1
100% grass-fed & finished beef tallow
The base. A stable, skin-friendly fat that carries the balm and leaves underarms conditioned.
- 2
Organic cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil
Softens the balm so it spreads at body temperature.
- 3
Organic arrowroot powder
A plant starch that absorbs surface moisture so the balm doesn't feel wet.
- 4
Magnesium hydroxide
A gentle mineral that helps control odor without baking soda.
No aluminum, no baking soda, no beeswax, no seed oils, no synthetic fragrance, no essential oils. It is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant — it helps control odor and does not stop sweat. Read about every ingredient.

Comparing magnesium deodorants
- Magnesium form
- Hydroxide (powder) vs. chloride (often in sprays). Ours is hydroxide.
- Base
- Seed oil, plant butter, coconut, or tallow. Ours is tallow.
- Hidden baking soda
- Some "magnesium" formulas still include baking soda. Ours doesn't.
- Fragrance
- Often added. Ours has none.
How to apply
- Start with clean, dry underarms — right after a shower is ideal.
- Scoop a pea-sized amount with a clean fingertip.
- Hold it against your skin for a few seconds so body heat softens the balm.
- Massage it in until it disappears. Repeat on the other side.
- Reapply later in the day if you need to. Patch test first if your skin is sensitive.
