Where seed oils show up in deodorant
Read a few natural-deodorant labels and you'll often see sunflower seed oil, safflower oil, or canola-derived ingredients. They're liquid, inexpensive, and easy to formulate with. Some people prefer to avoid them as a personal choice.
If that's you, the base fat is the thing to check. That's where most of a balm deodorant's oil comes from.
Tallow as the base
We use 100% grass-fed and finished beef tallow — a traditional fat people have used on skin for a long time. It's stable at room temperature, which is part of why we can make a soft balm without seed oils or extra hardeners.
The rest of the formula: organic unrefined coconut oil (pressed from coconut meat, not a seed oil in the usual sense), arrowroot powder, and magnesium hydroxide.
Ingredients
The full deodorant formula — four ingredients
- 1
100% grass-fed & finished beef tallow
The base. A stable, skin-friendly fat that carries the balm and leaves underarms conditioned.
- 2
Organic cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil
Softens the balm so it spreads at body temperature.
- 3
Organic arrowroot powder
A plant starch that absorbs surface moisture so the balm doesn't feel wet.
- 4
Magnesium hydroxide
A gentle mineral that helps control odor without baking soda.
No aluminum, no baking soda, no beeswax, no seed oils, no synthetic fragrance, no essential oils. It is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant — it helps control odor and does not stop sweat. Read about every ingredient.

Common deodorant bases
Typical examples — every brand is different, so read the label.
- Seed oils
- Sunflower, safflower, canola. Common in many natural sticks and creams.
- Plant butters
- Shea or cocoa butter. Often paired with waxes for sticks.
- Coconut oil
- Very common; often the main fat in natural deodorants.
- Tallow
- Our choice: grass-fed and finished, as the main ingredient.
How to apply
- Start with clean, dry underarms — right after a shower is ideal.
- Scoop a pea-sized amount with a clean fingertip.
- Hold it against your skin for a few seconds so body heat softens the balm.
- Massage it in until it disappears. Repeat on the other side.
- Reapply later in the day if you need to. Patch test first if your skin is sensitive.
