What Makes the Best Tallow Deodorant?
The best tallow deodorant is the one with a well-sourced tallow base, a short ingredient list, and an odor-control ingredient your skin tolerates. Here's how to compare them honestly.

Four ingredients
Tallow, coconut oil, arrowroot, magnesium hydroxide.
Grass-fed & finished
Tallow from cattle raised on grass their whole lives.
No baking soda
Magnesium hydroxide handles odor instead.
Small batch in Texas
Hand-poured in Taylor, TX.
How to judge a tallow deodorant
There's no official ranking for tallow deodorant, and we won't pretend ours is #1 by decree. What you can do is read the label. A good tallow deodorant tells you where its tallow comes from, keeps the ingredient list short enough to understand, and uses an odor-control ingredient that doesn't fight your skin.
The biggest differences between brands show up in three places: the quality of the tallow (grass-fed and finished vs. unspecified), whether baking soda is used, and how much fragrance or essential oil is added. Format matters too — jars and sticks need different formulas.
Where Lone Star fits
We built our deodorant around the questions above. The tallow is 100% grass-fed and finished. Odor control comes from magnesium hydroxide rather than baking soda. There's no added fragrance and no essential oils. And because it's a soft balm in a jar, we don't need beeswax or other hardeners — the whole formula is four ingredients.
It isn't the right fit for everyone. If you want sweat blocked, you want an antiperspirant, and that's a reasonable choice. If you want odor control from a simple, tallow-based balm, this is what we make.
Ingredients
The full deodorant formula — four ingredients
- 1
100% grass-fed & finished beef tallow
The base. A stable, skin-friendly fat that carries the balm and leaves underarms conditioned.
- 2
Organic cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil
Softens the balm so it spreads at body temperature.
- 3
Organic arrowroot powder
A plant starch that absorbs surface moisture so the balm doesn't feel wet.
- 4
Magnesium hydroxide
A gentle mineral that helps control odor without baking soda.
No aluminum, no baking soda, no beeswax, no seed oils, no synthetic fragrance, no essential oils. It is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant — it helps control odor and does not stop sweat. Read about every ingredient.

Lone Star Tallow Deodorant
A quick checklist
- Tallow source
- Look for grass-fed and finished, or at least a named source. "Tallow" alone tells you little.
- Ingredient count
- Fewer ingredients make it easier to know what you're putting on. Ours has four.
- Baking soda
- Some people do fine with it; others find it uncomfortable. Know which you are.
- Fragrance
- Added fragrance and essential oils are a matter of preference. Ours has none.
- Format
- Jar balms stay soft and apply by fingertip; sticks need waxes to hold shape.
How to use it
- Start with clean, dry underarms — right after a shower is ideal.
- Scoop a pea-sized amount with a clean fingertip.
- Hold it against your skin for a few seconds so body heat softens the balm.
- Massage it in until it disappears. Repeat on the other side.
- Reapply later in the day if you need to. Patch test first if your skin is sensitive.
