Why make a tallow deodorant without baking soda?
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is common in natural deodorants because it's cheap and effective at neutralizing odor. It's also strongly alkaline, and skin's surface is naturally slightly acidic. Some people use it without trouble; others find it uncomfortable over time.
We decided early on not to use it. Magnesium hydroxide is a mineral that helps control odor and is much less alkaline in practice on skin than baking soda. It's what does the odor work in our formula.
How the formula works without it
Grass-fed and finished tallow carries everything and leaves underarms conditioned. Coconut oil keeps the balm soft. Arrowroot absorbs surface moisture. Magnesium hydroxide helps keep odor down. That's it — four ingredients, nothing hiding behind "natural fragrance."
If you've already given up on natural deodorant because of baking soda, this is the kind of formula worth a second try.
Ingredients
The full deodorant formula — four ingredients
- 1
100% grass-fed & finished beef tallow
The base. A stable, skin-friendly fat that carries the balm and leaves underarms conditioned.
- 2
Organic cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil
Softens the balm so it spreads at body temperature.
- 3
Organic arrowroot powder
A plant starch that absorbs surface moisture so the balm doesn't feel wet.
- 4
Magnesium hydroxide
A gentle mineral that helps control odor without baking soda.
No aluminum, no baking soda, no beeswax, no seed oils, no synthetic fragrance, no essential oils. It is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant — it helps control odor and does not stop sweat. Read about every ingredient.

Lone Star Tallow Deodorant
Baking soda vs. magnesium hydroxide at a glance
- Baking soda
- Sodium bicarbonate. Effective, inexpensive, strongly alkaline. Common in natural deodorants.
- Magnesium hydroxide
- A mineral that helps control odor, used in a fine powder. Our choice.
- Either one
- Neither stops sweat. Both are deodorant ingredients, not antiperspirants.
How to apply
- Start with clean, dry underarms — right after a shower is ideal.
- Scoop a pea-sized amount with a clean fingertip.
- Hold it against your skin for a few seconds so body heat softens the balm.
- Massage it in until it disappears. Repeat on the other side.
- Reapply later in the day if you need to. Patch test first if your skin is sensitive.
